Building rewards and loyalty products for customer retention
Making recognition easier for businesses and rewards clearer for customers.
Overview
The product context
I led architecture and hands-on product development across rewards, vouchers, loyalty journeys, merchant tools, and redemption experiences.
The problem
What made this worth solving
Businesses know repeat customers matter, but many lack a simple way to issue rewards, manage vouchers, track redemption, and understand whether loyalty activity is working.
My role
Ownership, contribution, and boundaries
My work covered product discovery, customer and merchant conversations, prioritisation, user journeys, specifications, hands-on development, release coordination, and early adoption learning.
- Led customer and merchant discovery
- Set product priorities and translated them into user journeys
- Specified and built rewards, vouchers, and redemption capabilities
- Coordinated releases and gathered early adoption feedback
- Connected product decisions to retention and repeat-engagement behaviour
Key insight
A loyalty product cannot feel like extra administration for the business or a confusing points system for the customer. The reward must be understandable, easy to claim, and connected to a clear reason to return.
Approach
How the work moved forward
- Spoke with businesses and customers about current loyalty behaviour
- Mapped the reward creation and redemption loop
- Prioritised the points of greatest operational and customer friction
- Built merchant and customer-facing capabilities
- Used early adoption learning to refine the roadmap
Outcome
What the work enabled
- Built an end-to-end foundation for reward creation and redemption
- Connected merchant operations with a clearer customer experience
- Created a product foundation for testing repeat-engagement journeys
Reflection
What I carry into the next product
- A reward only changes behaviour when the customer understands its value.
- Merchant effort is a core adoption constraint, not an implementation detail.
- Retention products need a closed measurement loop between issuance, redemption, and return.
Some operational details and internal metrics have been intentionally omitted or generalised.
